Sussex County Public Schools will provide the necessary instructional resources, learning opportunities and leadership for students to reach their highest educational potential to be our leaders of tomorrow.

Requirements to Teach

  • Possess or be eligible for Virginia Licensure

  • Possess a degree or advanced degree from an accredited four-year College or University

  • Complete an on-line teacher application.

  • Interview with the personnel administrator and school principal

Sussex County, Virginia

Sussex County is a rural county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,087. Its county seat is Sussex. Sussex County was formed in 1754 and named after Sussex County, England.  Settlement of Sussex County started prior to 1700 when people began to move south of the Blackwater River.

Sussex County is located in Southside Virginia about 30 miles southeast of Petersburg, Virginia. Both Interstate 95 and Route 460 are major throughways of the county.

Sussex County Courthouse

This Jeffersonian Roman revival courthouse was completed by 1828 by brick Mason Dabney Cosby, Sr. He is best known for constructing a series of Jeffersonian courthouses in the style he mastered while employed as a mason in the construction of the Thomas Jefferson designed University of Virginia.

Sussex County Public Schools

Sussex County Public Schools are all located on a single campus approximately 1/2 mile from the county seat on Route 40.

The school district consists of three schools; one elementary school, one middle school and one comprehensive high school in the county with a total student population of approximately 1,200. 

Sussex County Public Schools has a regional affiliation with the Rowanty Technical Center and the Appomattox Regional Governor's School and offers dual enrollment through a partnership with Bright Point Community College.

The Tiger mosaic that serves as our logo was created by former Principal and local Artist Wade H. Goodwyn III. The mosaic is displayed in the entry foyer of Sussex Central High School.
